The Internet, fax machines and 9 years at HR Media

30 June 2008

I’ve been asked to write a blog for the company website about being pregnant and working, but being a law unto myself, I’ve decided to write it about something else.

However, in brief, and for those who care, once I had got over the fact that ‘morning sickness' is in fact an evil lie and found that a pregnant woman can be sick at any time of day or night, it's not really been any different working when pregnant or not. Admittedly, on occasion my mind has wandered from the task in hand to the thought of crunching on some honeycomb and my ankles aren't a pretty site, but hey ho.

Anyway, what I actually chose to talk about was the fact I've been asked to blog. It has made me realise how far we've come in communication methods. When I first joined HR Media nine years ago (gold watch next year!) we faxed all of our press releases out and had to rely on the Royal Mail to deliver photographs to the media.

When we finally moved into the brave new world of the Internet and began sending press releases via email, we had to work with newspapers who couldn't accept attachments as their own IT was lagging behind (you know who you are!) and now, in the space of a decade, we are blogging about random experiences and helping clients to make the use of podcasting and film footage on their websites.

Whatever next? When I return from maternity leave I'm sure there will be some new-fangled way of communicating and that I'll have to get up to speed yet again, either that or I'll dust off the old fax machine......
