McCabe honoured by property colleagues

Sheffield United chairman and Scarborough Group International chief Kevin McCabe has been named Yorkshire and North East property personality of the year.

At a ceremony attended by more than 400 people at the Royal Armouries in Leeds, McCabe's son Scott picked up the trophy. McCabe himself was on business in New York.

McCabe was picked by an academy of 120 leading Yorkshire and North East property lights for his contribution to the industry over the last year.

The awards, organised by English Partnerships and Property Week, honoured McCabe's achievements from July 2007 to 2008.

McCabe said: "It is a great honor and a great pleasure to receive this award.

"I would like to thank the organisers and the academy, and I also thank my colleagues. Being honoured by your peers in the industry always makes it extra special.  The property industry is currently going through difficult times but the challenge now is to respond proactively and collectively to steer our sector through the tough tests ahead."

McCabe, Sheffield born-and bred, commenced his career in property and construction in 1964.  He set up the Scarborough Property Group (Scarborough) in 1980 which is still wholly owned by the McCabe family.

With offices in 11 countries and investments in 16, Scarborough is a global company.  Within Scarborough sits Forsyth, the second oldest serviced office provider in the UK.  Last year Scarborough sold subsidiary SCAMP to Australian property group - Valad - within which Kevin now sits on the Board of Directors.

A life long Blade, McCabe became Chairman of Sheffield United in 1999, his ambition being to convert an old fashioned football club into a modern business providing leisure and services with football at its hub.

The Blades became the first club to launch its own property investment fund - United Scarborough Estates - in 2005 and the first club to buy a Chinese football club, rechristened Chengdu Blades.  McCabe is also Chairman of Frasers Property (UK) Ltd.
