New recruits for DLA Piper's Sheffield team

6 October 2008

Young law graduates will put their studies into practice at leading Sheffield law firm DLA Piper.

The latest crop of nine law graduates, eight of whom graduated from the University of Sheffield, will spend two years at the company's office at St Paul's Place working in rotation across four different practice groups before they choose to specialise in a sector.

They will be encouraged to work with existing teams including Corporate, Commercial, Real Estate, Construction, Commercial Litigation & Arbitration, Property Litigation, Environment, Health & Safety, Restructuring & Insolvency, Banking, Employment & Pensions and Technology & Intellectual Property.

The young lawyers will learn and develop the skills needed to analyse legal problems and provide accurate commercial advice. They will also have opportunities to be seconded to a number of the firm's offices around the world, particularly in some of the current global commercial "hotspots" such as Dubai, Russia and Asia.

Steve Sly, office managing partner in the Sheffield office of DLA Piper said: "It is important that we continue to invest in our business by recruiting at this level and in these numbers.  DLA Piper is committed to ensuring our new recruits develop a legal knowledge of each practice area and get hands-on experience and training to provide the essential foundations for a successful career in a vibrant commercial environment.

"We believe that rotation provides a comprehensive and meaningful knowledge of each practice area and it gives graduates the opportunity to observe and work with Partners and other teams of lawyers working in practice groups.  The size and continued success of the firm means we are very flexible in making sure our lawyers get to work in areas that most interest them.

"We believe that our approach to investment and training of graduates is reflected in our impressive retention rates on qualification.  Our newly qualified lawyers have very broad opportunities within DLA Piper not only in Sheffield, but also across the UK and all of our international business."

The Sheffield office also currently has nine second year trainees working at the St Paul's Place office.
