A Sheffield woman has handed over nearly £13,000 to help a children’s charity buy a vital piece of medical equipment.
Lucy Crapper, 34, donated the money to Sheffield Children's Hospital Charity to pay for a Newborn Hearing Screener for the hospital's neo-natal department.
Lucy, a senior residential valuer and auctioneer from leading estate agent Blundells, raised the money by taking part in last year's New York City Marathon.
Lucy, from Nethergreen, said: "It was brilliant to be able to donate such a substantial amount of money to a very worth cause. The Children's Hospital Charity was one of my chosen charities because many of my friends have recently had children and so supporting a cause that could potentially help them and many other children in the future is worth while.
"The hospital does a fantastic job for children from across the region and we are very lucky to have it in our city.
"Blundells is a major supporter of the Children's Hospital Charity and so they sponsored me £10,000 - which was fantastic. In total I raised £22,000 for my three chosen charities."
Lucy ran the 26.2 mile course along with 40,000 other runners, in what is the world's most popular marathon, for three charities; Sheffield Children's Hospital, Weston Park Hospital Cancer Research Centre and the National Breast Cancer Campaign. She completed the marathon in a time of just under five hours.
Lucy added: "David Vernon-Edwards from Sheffield Children's Hospital Charity showed me around the hospital's various departments and explained which campaigns they were fundraising for.
"The amount I raised for the charity matched the cost of the Newborn Hearing Screener, so it was ideal for me to fund this piece of equipment.
Lucy added: "Taking part in the New York Marathon was a fantastic experience. It was my first marathon, so to have taken part in such a popular event was great. It's a wonderful city and the buzz of the crowd was amazing. Thousands of people came out to support the runners and they were always cheering and urging you on. I really enjoyed it - it was very painful and hard work, but fun nonetheless."
The Newborn Hearing Screener is a machine that helps monitor a baby's hearing and checks for any potential problems or difficulties in just a few minutes.
David Vernon-Edwards, director of Sheffield Children's Hospital Charity, said: "Lucy has donated a fantastic amount of money for the charity and we are truly grateful for her efforts.
"The hearing screener that Lucy's money has enabled us to buy will help detect and monitor newborn baby's hearing. It is a superb piece of equipment that will help thousands of children in the region."
