The organisation which helps Sheffield businesses to be successful has itself reported an impressive performance.
The Sheffield Chamber of Commerce has reported a trading surplus of £3,568, which included a provision for outstanding monies) with net assets of £2.71m).Membership has improved significantly passing the 2,000 mark - the highest ever - representing almost 100,000 employees in the Sheffield city region.
Chamber Chief Executive Nigel Tomlinson said: "The relevance of the Chamber is unprecedented. Ever increasing membership levels coupled with the achievements in the World Chamber Awards, where we finished as a runner-up, are clear indicators that we are offering a world class service to our members.
"The last twelve months have not been without their challenges - in particular last summer's floods. It is a testament to the strength of character of businesses and employees in the city that the vast majority of businesses were able to ‘dry out' and trade again so quickly. We believe that the support response in Sheffield was an excellent demonstration of partnership in action with all of the major agencies coordinating their activities together.
"Of course, many businesses suffered and unfortunately some will not have recovered but we remain ready to offer support wherever we can."
Highlights from the year include:
· Subsidiary Sheffield Enterprise Agency (SENTA) provided substantial support to more than 500 entrepreneurs
· The Chamber Recruitment Service was re-launched
· The staging of the largest-ever portfolio of events, ranging from breakfast networking events to the critically acclaimed Sheffield Business Awards.
Mr Tomlinson added: "Our performance means we are well placed to continue to support businesses and invest surpluses back for the benefit of our member organisations.
"Looking to 2008-09, the period is already proving to be exciting and busy for the Chamber. We are resolute in our commitment to ensure the Chamber remains relevant to members and to further develop our offering of services to ensure that we can help maximise the business success and prosperity of our members."
