Blades Soccer Camp uncovers Euro 2008 talent

3 September 2008

Youngsters at the Sheffield United’s Academy took part in a mini Euro 2008 tournament to round off the summer soccer camp season.

Boys and girls aged under 13 were split into teams representing France, Holland, Russia, Spain, Portugal and Sweden. Games were played in Under 8s and Over 8s categories.

Siblings Jake and Carly Wilkinson who both played for France were complimented by the coaches on their skills, as were Liam Waldock, Ethan Knowles and Jack Charlesworth.

The star attraction on the last day, which saw Russia beat Holland in the Under 8s final and France seeing off Spain in the Over 8s, was a guest appearance by first team players Jordan Robertson and Kyle Naughton.

They joined the children for a photo and answered questions about their training programmes, how they came to be in football and their likes and dislikes. Kyle also described how he felt about recently scoring his first senior goal in the Cup win over Huddersfield.

Blades starlet Kyle said: "It is great for kids to be able to play during the holidays and improve their skills. You never know they may just be good enough to get noticed. As a local lad I am really pleased to be able to support events like these."

Sue Beeley, Head of Community at Sheffield United, said: "It is great when the players call in to the camps, which they do throughout the summer to say hello to the kids. They are so excited and of course it really motivates them to develop their skills. The idea of the Euro 2008 competition has gone down really well."
