Stagecoach on the move

27 May 2008

Bus operator Stagecoach Yorkshire is preparing for a phased move from its head office and depot on Upper Sheffield Road, Barnsley.

When the company took over from Yorkshire Traction in 2005, a sale had already been agreed for the land to make way for a new housing development but Stagecoach Yorkshire was allowed to stay until suitable new premises could be found.

A phased closure of the Upper Sheffield Road site is now taking place, with all management and administration staff moving from 6 June to a new location for its head office near Barnsley Interchange. This enables Stagecoach to keep jobs in Barnsley and build on plans to continue developing services.

For the time being, vehicles will still be using the Upper Sheffield Road depot but plans are underway for a complete closure of the site later in the year when the operation will be transferred to Stagecoach Yorkshire's other Barnsley depot on Wakefield Road.

Paul Lynch, managing director of Stagecoach Yorkshire, said: "When we took over from Yorkshire Traction, we were aware that the land on which the depot stands on Upper Sheffield Road had already been sold to property developers so we have been working hard to find appropriate new premises to house our head office and depot.

"We are now in a position to move our management and administration staff to new premises and the depot element, which involves about 80 vehicles, will follow to Wakefield Road later this year. We would like to reassure our passengers that bus services will not be affected by the change of depot."

From 6 June 2008, Stagecoach Yorkshire's head office will be relocating to Unit 4 Eldon Arcade, Barnsley, South Yorkshire, S70 2JP, tel. 01226 202555, fax 01226 346710.
