New Year – new resolutions
January 2012 by Kate LahiveAccording to research many of us will have already ditched our new year’s resolutions less than a fortnight into 2012.
Promises to get fit, lose weight and save money regularly top the polls of things people most want to change.
And as someone who has had rather mixed success in all three areas over the last couple of decades, I know it isn’t easy to completely overhaul years of bad habits in one fell swoop.
With this in mind I’ve decided to take a different tack and to focus on make small changes which are positive rather than punishing.
So in striving to be healthier in what I hope is an achievable way, I’ve started munching on carrots at lunchtime instead of crisps, and am trying to avoid the temptations of the office biscuits!
But top of my list is to see more of close friends and family, and spend time doing the things we enjoy together – such as walking, seeing films, comedy and listening to music.
While it’s great to be spontaneous, everyone is so busy these days I’ve come to appreciate that as in working life, a bit of planning goes a long way to achieve the things that really matter.
Fortunately in Sheffield there’s so much to do that we’re spoilt for choice with a range of venues and masses of leisure opportunities.
This year I want to see more films and fortunately the Showroom Cinema is just two minutes from HR Media – so it’s easy to meet up with friends to catch a film and a drink after work.
I’m also planning to get back into seeing more live comedy at pubs in Sheffield including The Greystones Pub which holds regular events.
And then there’s the continuation my quest to see the pop stars that I loved in my youth. My mission kicked off in December when I finally achieved a long standing ambition to see the fantastic Adam Ant, who wowed the crowd the O2 Academy Sheffield.
Looking ahead there’s much to look forward to and I’ve already got Madness, Erasure and of course Sheffield’s own Human League in my sights for this year!
