Audible content casts an immediate response

November 2009 by Martin Webb

While the vernacular of the ‘digerati’ might still appear jargon-heavy and insular to those outside of its realm, the ‘podcast’ is now very much considered a part of everyday common language (and life!) and even appears in the Oxford English Dictionary.

At HR Media, we realised the importance and popularity of podcasts some time ago and have been providing audio content to the media and our clients consistently for more than two years. We have provided material to local radio stations, client websites, award submissions, exhibitions, pitches, e-newsletters and online platforms.

Podcasting encompasses recorded interviews, corporate information, events, news stories, opinion and analysis. Coupled with a good website, podcasting can spread relevant information to a highly diverse audience.

The immediacy of the podcast was never so apparent as when the 2009 Budget – arguably the most important for many a generation – was announced. We recorded an audio reaction with Helen Rana from Sheffield Chamber of Commerce immediately after the Chancellor’s speech. Most commentator reactions were not visible until the next day, yet people searching on the web for comment were able to listen to the thoughts of one of Yorkshire’s key business voices within minutes of the commending of the budget. The reaction was also sent to all Chamber members, keeping them in the loop and providing the membership with a much more considered and personable response.

The visits of dignitaries, sports stars and celebrities also makes for ideal podcasting fodder. These people are already well known to the general public, so to hear them speak on your story/subject matter is incredibly engaging and much more likely to invoke a reaction form the audience. For example, we recorded podcasts with Sheffield Wednesday star Tommy Spur at Neurocare Hospital and Skills Minister David Lammy at Sheffield Forgemasters.
